Restorative Approach Online Course

Feb 20, 2023 | Projects

An introductory curriculum to a restorative approach (RA) and its application to healthcare harm was developed. The purpose of the curriculum was to introduce an alternative approach to respond to healthcare harm, outline the primary concepts within a RA worldview, and provide learners with the foundation necessary to begin to explore the potential of a RA in healthcare contexts.

The curriculum was delivered as a hybrid course consisting of four modules. Modules I – II are self-guided, online sections which introduce the background of restorative processes, the principles of a RA, the processes of responding to harm within healthcare, and the nature of compounded harm. The modules consist of mixed media, largely featuring written content that is supplemented with video interviews from health professionals and informative graphics.

Modules III – IV were offered as virtual seminars serving as an introduction to a model of RA in events of healthcare harm.  Learners explored the opportunity of a RA within the healthcare context, sought to appreciate the interconnectedness of people and systems and began to explore an alternative approach to address healthcare harm.

The diversity of content delivery was identified as a strength of the curriculum, with one participant stating that “the online and follow-up zoom delivery allowed time for reflection and analyzing one’s perspective” and another stating that “the combination of online and live modules help cement my understanding of this approach.”
